5 Reasons Why I Fell in Love with Florence

3. The people

Like most, you’ve probably heard Italians aren’t too fond of people of color.

Well, I am living proof that that is not always the case.

From the airport baristas who made me laugh after a long travel day to the Dolceforte shopkeeper, Elena Carradori, who wrote out a whole list when I asked for nearby gelato recommendations, my interactions in Florence were lovely experiences.

In fact, our tour group of 21 consisted of several people of color, and all were treated with kindness and respect wherever we went.

But business owners and staff weren’t the only pleasant encounters.

On separate occasions, I attended a cooking class at the Cordon Bleu Firenze and a dinner hosted in a local’s home. Both the charismatic cooking instructor, Mickèl, and the hospitable home host, Valeria, were a joy to be around.

Italians are truly warm, welcoming people. And I highly suggest you find that out for yourself someday.
